The Souhegan High School field hockey team did the unthinkable on Sunday.
No. 8 Souhegan opened the Division II tournament with a 3-0 win last Friday over No. 9 Plymouth -- the team that upset the Sabers in the first round last year -- and went on the road to defeat top-seeded and unbeaten Lebanon, 4-3, Sunday in the quarterfinals. It wasn't so much the win that was a surprise for Souhegan, but how the Sabers did it -- Lebanon had allowed just two goals all season before giving up double that in one game.
... Now Souhegan will face the top-seeded Raiders, who defeated No. 16 Bedford 4-0, in the prelims. Lebanon allowed just two goals all season, outscoring its opponents 59-2. The two teams did not play in the regular season.
"Sometimes when you only know a little bit, you have a couple things to work on, but you're not so focused on eliminating certain players or things," Hooper said. "You're able to just kind of play the way you do."
Fleming (Plymouth coach) liked Souhegan's chances of pulling off an upset.
"It's a good Souhegan team and they should be able to do well against Lebanon," she said. "They'll take it to them. Somebody needs to."
